This collection consists of around 600 volumes by, about or relating to Charles Darwin.
There are multiple editions of all of Darwin's major works, and the many of the items which appear in The works of Charles Darwin: an annotated bibliographical handlistby R. B. Freeman. Additionally, Mr Johns acquired works by Erasmus Darwin, Charles' paternal grandfather, and about the Wedgwood family. Items relating to other scientists include various works by Joseph Dalton Hooker and Thomas Huxley, Charles Lyell on elements of geology, and two nineteenth century books of the natural theologian William Paley. In addition, Mr Johns collected a small number of works relating to Alfred Russel Wallace.
Details of Mr. Johns' acquisition of his collection and various newspaper cuttings relating to Darwin are catalogued separately.
