One Day in May

Over 600 photographs entered into a competition organised by the University and the Hull Daily Mail to take a picture, on 1 May 2001, of the region - with photographs organised into into six themes; 'environment', 'family', 'leisure', 'school', 'sport' and 'work'

This photography competiton organised by the university in conjunction with the Hull Daily Mail invited individuals to take a picture of the region at the turn of the new century to create a photographic archive. All of the pictures were taken on Tuesday 1 May 2001 and then fitted into six categories; 'environment', 'family', 'leisure', 'school', 'sport' and 'work'.

Each entry is mounted onto paper or card with the original entry form on the reverse. A complete list of entries for that particular theme and age range is also included. Most of the photographs are in colour with a few in black and white.

There followed an exhibition of some of the entries and a prize giving ceremony on 28 June and at the Princes Quay shopping centre in July 2001. The photographs were judged by Dr Mike Parnwell and Jack Hyman from the Hull Photographic Society and the Hull Daily Mail's photographer Dave Keegan. Prizes were awarded to individuals in each category in three age ranges - 'upto 13', '13-18' and 'over 18'. A total of 612 photographs were received.

A number of events were captured including the opening of the new ferry terminal in Hull, Pocklington Arts Festival, the impact of foot and mouth disease and the 2001 Census.

Copyright remains with the photographer, but the entry form does clearly allow permitted re-use of the material for education and exhibition purposes
