Scope and Content

Articles and photographs regarding Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, taken from newspapers and other publications. The first half of the scrapbook is devoted to photographs. There are a few maps, including some of South East Asia. These are followed by photographs relating mainly to the domestic economy, including batik, cinchona (quinine), coffee, copra, fishing, rice, rubber, salt, sugar, tea, teak, tobacco and woodcarving. There are also general photographs of market scenes and village industries, and a few depicting dances, dignatories and monuments. The second half of the volume contains a wide range of articles and images relating to South East Asia, including further material on the economy and a set of sketches of Sarawak scenes. The items in the scrapbook are undated, but a note on the front cover indicates that they originate from after 1946. One of the newscuttings is dated 1952.
