The provenance of the collection is uncertain, but it was possibly gathered by a member of the family of Dr. Walter Gardiner (9787/2), who can be linked to the other principal recipients of letters. He was a botanist, as were A.C. Seward (9787/1) and Sir W.T. Thiselton-Dyer (9787/5); a fellow of Clare, as was J.R. Wardale (9787/4); and bursar of Clare contemporaneously with the bursarships of R.T. Glazebrook and H.M. Innes at Trinity (9787/3). In addition, at least two letters in the miscellaneous series were addressed to successive Masters of Clare (9787/9/4, 7); and one to E.S. Shuckburgh, Librarian of Emmanuel (9787/9/1), of which Seward was a fellow from 1900 to 1906, and G.H. Watts (9787/8) a member of the library staff (as well as being Sewards clerk at the University Free Trade Association).
