Apprenticeship Indentures

In 1873 a number of small craft societies in the Midlands and the north who operated a collective bargaining system with employers formed a union. It was reconstituted in 1882 as the Amalgamated Slaters of England Provident Society and renamed itself the Amalgamated Slaters and Tilers Provident Society of England and Ireland four years later. In the 20th century the Society had connections with the large amalgamated building workers' unions and the collection contains circulars and correspondence from related organisations such as the National Federation of Building Trades Operatives. It became the Amalgamated Slaters, Tilers and Roofing Operatives Society in 1946 and ceased to exist as an independent trade union in 1969, with its ongoing work transferred to the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers (later the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians).

The two indentures were the depositor's father and step-brother.
