Scope and Content

This volume contains three works of Johanan bar Penkaye: Reš melle d-tash'ītā, a treatise on chastity and holiness, and the metrical discourses on religious themes. The text was copied in black ink with red used for titles and catchwords. There is considerable illumination throughout, in red, yellow, green, blue, and bronze, some of which is geometric in nature. Illustration of crosses, anthropomorphic figures, and plans or maps are also featured throughout the text. The text itself is in the Madenḥāyā script. The original colopon (ff 245 r-v) states that the text was copied out in 1573 AG (1261-62 CE) on the orders of the Deacon at the Church of Beth Bidīz (?) in the city of St. Mary (Mārtay Maryam), St. Esṭefānūs, and St. Giūrgīs. A second colophon (ff 246r-v) clarifies that the current copy was produced in 2212 AG (1901 CE) in a village whose name is partially effaced.
