SYKEHOUSE, HOLY TRINITY PARISH RECORDS

This parish was created out of the parish of Fishlake.

In the year 1434 the village of Sykehouse was allowed to build its own chapel and to have its own priest. But the village and chapel remained part of the parish and living of Fishlake, until the year 1860, when on 10 March it was published in the London Gazette, that Her Majesty had been pleased to authorise 'The District Chapelry of Holy Trinity Sykehouse'. This authority now made it possible for the publication of banns, solemnization of marriages, baptisms and burials in the village church. Even so, the building remained as it had been for nearly two centuries, since its restoration following the Reformation period, when it had fallen into neglect.

On 6 December 1867, the Durham Chronicle records the laying of the foundation stone of the Church of the Holy Trinity Sykehouse. Clergy who were present for the occasion included the Revd. J W. McKinley Milman, and the Revd. George Ornsby, Honorary Canon of Durham Cathedral, and the vicar of the Mother Church of Fishlake. The architect of the new church was Mr C Hodgson fowler, M.R.I.B.A. architect to the Dean and Chapter of Durham, with the builder being Mr J Young of Goole.

The church celebrated its Centenary with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday 14 May 1967 (See P26/10/3 for further details of this event).
