Administrative / Biographical History

Highland Distilleries Co Ltd was formed in 1887 through the merger of the Islay Distillery Co Ltd, owners of the Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay, Argyll & Bute, Scotland, and William Grant & Co, owners of the Glenrothes-Glenlivit Distillery, Rothes, Moray, Scotland. The central offices of the company were shared with Robertson & Baxter, whisky merchants, at 48 West Nile St, Glasgow, Scotland. Robertson & Baxter was a major client of the company, purchasing stock for blending and in later years undertaking marketing of Highland Distilleries products.

The central offices were responsible for co-ordinating the work of the distilleries owned by Highland Distilleries Co Ltd, including the Bunnahabhain Distillery, Islay, Argyll & Bute; the Glenglassaugh Distillery, Portsoy, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; the Glenrothes-Glenlivet Distillery, Rothes, Moray, Scotland; and the Tamdhu-Glenlivet Distillery, Knockando, Moray.

In 1992, Highland Distilleries Co Ltd became a public limited company, Highland Distilleries Co plc, changing to Highland Distillers Ltd in 1998 and Highland Distillers Group Ltd in 2001. In 1999, the company had been acquired by Edrington Group Ltd, the successor company of Robertson & Baxter Ltd and by 2001 the Highland Distillers offices had moved to Perth, Scotland.
