The ATI was formed in 1894 to support technical institutions, influence government and local councils and aid development of technical education throughout the UK. It initially had 27 member institutions which included Schools of Science and Art, Mechanics' Institutes and Technical Schools.By 1947 this had grown to 227. The ATI was concerned to improve the teaching of technical subjects, develop examinations and standards and promote technical education to industry and related organisations. In 1970, the ATI changed its name to the Association of Colleges for Further and Higher Education (ACFHE).
