The Society of Antiquaries of London was founded in 1707. The purpose of the Society, as described in its royal charter of 1751, is the ‘encouragement, advancement and furtherance of the study and knowledge of the antiquities and history of this and other countries.’ Election as a member (called a fellow) of the Society is preceded by nomination by existing fellows who recommend the candidate ‘as likely to become a useful and valuable Fellow thereof.’
