Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Hexthorpe Board School was opened on 4 May 1885 providing education for boys and girls at Shadyside, Hexthorpe. In 1926, it was divided into separate boys and girls departments. The second log book is, therefore, that of Hexthorpe Council Junior Boys School. The log book of the girls department: Hexthorpe Council Junior Girls School is listed under the reference SR31. The Junior Girls School only existed as a separate institution between 1926 and 1931. These two institutions were merged in 1931 to form Hexthorpe Council Junior Mixed School for pupils aged between 7 and 12 years. In 1970, work began on a new school building in Urban Road. This building was opened in June 1972 and the old building was used by the Infants school. As a result of reforms in local government, in 1974 the school came under the administrative control of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. Hexthorpe Middle school closed in July 1995, in order to merge with Hexthorpe First School to become Hexthorpe Primary School, opened in September 1995. The records of Hexthorpe Council Infants School which became Hexthorpe First School are listed under the reference SR129.
