Manuscript correspondence book of Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon, 1st Baron Stanmore, containing drafts and copies of his despatches written whilst Governor of Mauritius, 21 February 1871-16 January 1873.

Administrative / Biographical History

Arthur Charles Hamilton-Gordon (1829-1912), 1st Baron Stanmore, served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister (1852-1855), MP for Beverley (1854-1857), and Secretary to a Special Mission to Corfu (1858-1859). Between 1861 and 1890 he held the posts of Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick (1861-1866), Governor of Trinidad (1866-1870), Governor of Mauritius (1871-1874), Governor of Fiji (1875-1880), Governor of New Zealand (1880-1882), High Commissioner and Consul-General of the Southern Pacific (1877-1882), and Governor of Ceylon (1883-1890). He was awarded the KCMG in 1871 and the GCMG in 1878.
