Scope and Content

A day school in the parish commenced in 1823; by 1833 six such schools taught 100 children. In 1839 a building converted from the Baptist Chapel in George Street (now Cave Street) was converted for a school for Boys, Girls and Infants. In 1891 new buildings in Boulter Street were built for 204 girls. The Girls School closed in 1929 and the Boys School on Cross Street became a Senior Mixed School (please see S198/4 for records of this school).
