Administrative / Biographical History

The Comparative Education Society in Europe (CESE) was founded in 1961 and the British section of the Society came into existence at a conference at the University of Reading in 1965. A revision of the CESE statutes in 1979 no longer included provision for sections and the British Comparative Education Society was formed as an offshoot of CESE. In 1983, its name was amended to the British Comparative and International Education Society (BCIES). Its main aims were to encourage the growth of comparative and international studies by organising conferences, visits and publications, including a journal called Compare. In 1997, it merged with the British Association of Teachers and Researchers in Overseas Education (BATROE) to form the British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE).
