Scope and Content

Photographs of or taken by Nurse Olive Sambourne. Contains:

Red plastic photo album containing pictures of Sambourne and her classmates during nursing training at Hull Infirmary. The album contains typed notes regarding the contents and contexts of the photos as well as a paper copy of a programme from the Hull Infirmary Nurses Training School prize giving ceremony on 2 Oct 1946. Some photographs have been autographed by Sambourne’s classmates and many have notes written on the back.

Administrative / Biographical History

Olive Annie Sambourne was born in Parr, Cornwall in 1926. She trained as a nurse at Hull Royal Infirmary and Sutton Annexe Hull between 1943 and 1946. After qualifying she worked for two years as a staff nurse, then six as a theatre sister. She took a break from nursing to marry and raise a family (c.1954). When her children were grown, she completed a back to nursing course and returned to work in the geriatric unit of Nether Edge Hospital, Sheffield. Sambourne remained at Nether Edge Hospital until her retirement. She passed away in 2018.
