Administrative / Biographical History

Madame Crystal Ltd. (1948 - 1980) was established by the glove maker Christine Maria Tugendhat, ně Crystal, in Austria. She married A. Tugendhat, who had established the firm of A. Tugendhat, woollen manufacturers, in Austria in 1928. Both were Jewish and in 1939 they fled to England where they continued their respective businesses based in Newman Street, London. Madame Crystal became a limited company in 1948 and went into voluntary liquidation in 1980. The firm of A. Tugendhat continued as yarn importers, importing high-quality yarn from Austria. Although the firms existed as separate entities their accounts were kept jointly until the liquidation of Madame Crystal Ltd in 1980.
