Administrative / Biographical History
John Rankine was born in Sorn, Ayrshire, in 1846. He was educated in Sorn and at Edinburgh Academy, and then he studied at Edinburgh University graduating in 1865. He then studied at the University of Heidelberg. Rankine was called to the Scottish Bar in 1869 and in 1888 was appointed to the Chair of Scots Law at Edinburgh University. His publications include The law of landownership in Scotland, The law of leases in Scotland, and The law of personal bar in Scotland. He retired in 1922. Professor Sir John Rankine died in 1922.
