Papers of the Navy Records Society

In the 1980s Professor Anthony Ryan of the School of History at Liverpool University was made secretary of the society. The papers in this collection therefore generally comprise the documents held by Professor Ryan and those given to him by his predecessors. The papers include correspondence with society members, details of meetings including discussions of papers and publications.

The Navy Records Society was established in 1893 with the aim of publishing original documents and papers concerning British naval history. Led by historians, publicists and navy officers, the group sought to publish volumes covering major historical figures in the Royal Navy, including Nelson, Beatty and Cunningham. As of 2012, the society still continues to publish two volumes annually, and has produced over 150 volumes of documents in total.

These papers were given by the School of History to the University Archive in May 2012.
