Scope and Content

This volume contains a manual of hygiene by Şuuri Hasan Efendi (died 1105 AH/1693-94 CE), better known as the author of the Ferheng-i Şuuri. The work (according to OM II, p. 261) was dedicated to the Grand Vezir Ahmet Paşa. On f 118r of this copy, the date of composition (1088 AH/1677-78 CE) is mentioned. The work is divided into a mukaddime, two makaleler, and a hatime, and subdivided into ebvap and fusul. The first makale (f 8v) deals with bodily health and how to maintain it, for example with food, climate, and the effects of various musical modes on health. The second makale (f 97r) contains, among other things, a description of the characteristics of different types and races of men and some erotica. There are many marginal explanations of the difficult Persian or Arabic words that occur throughout the text. The text contains a single unvan. This manuscript was copied in 1208 AH (1793-94 CE).
