Scope and Content

This volume contains the Divan of Baki, the greatest lyric poet of the Ottoman Empire. The Divan begins with fifteen kaside with the following contents:. (I) f 2v : In praise of Sultan Mehmet III;. (II) f 3r : Elegy on the death of Süleyman's daughter, Princess Mihr ü Mah;. (III) f 4v : On the death of Süleyman. Of this elegy, only the first seven lines are extent, a leaf or more having been lost;. (IV) f 5r : Description of the palace of Feridun Bey, wanting the first eleven lines;. (V) f 6v : In praise of Sultan Süleyman;. (VI) f 8r : In praise of Mehmet Çelebi;. (VII) f 9v : In praise of Ali Paşa;. (VIII) f 11r : In praise of Sultan Selim II;. (IX) f 12v : In praise of Ali Paşa;. (X) f 14r : In praise of Kadızade;. (XI) f 15v : In praise of Mehmet Çelebi;. (XII) f 17r : In praise of Muftü Ebüsü'ud;. (XIII) f 18v : In praise of Hoca Saadeddin;. (XIV) f 19v : In praise of Kubad Paşa;. (XV) f 21r : In praise of Baba Efendi (Hoca Saadeddin). The alphabetical series of gazeller begins on f 22v. At the end of the work (ff 97v-101r) are three Muhammesat with a few kıt'aat, mesneviler, and ferdiyat. The volume contains eight whole-page illustrations in Persian style found on ff 1, 2, 25, 30, 44, 77 and 89. The illustration on f 2 contains two lines of a Persian gazel by Baki. The volume also contains two unvans and various designs in gold along the margins. From the colophon, it appears that this volume was copied for Şah Safi by Bende-yi Şah-i Necef (the servant of Ali) Efşar and was completed on 1 Şaaban 1046 AH (29 December 1636 CE).
