This manuscript contains the poetry of Hasan Hilmi. According to the Sicill-i Osmani, this Hilmi was born in 1197 AH (1782-83 CE) and rose to become the Müftü of Cyprus. His proficiency as a poet was such that Sultan Mahmud II praised him by calling him melikü'ş-şuara. He died in 1264 AH (1847-48 CE). Hilmi's attachment to Sunni interpretations of Islam can be said to provide the underlying theme for his poems, which are not, however, lacking in emotionality. Except in the opening poem, every beyit in the Divan ends with an invocation to the Prophet Muhammad صلعم. This manuscript is undated, but was likely copied within a few decades of the poet's death, and possibly even before it.
