A berat or charter regarding the passage of French ships through the Bosporus and the customs duty payable. The berat contains the tughra of Sultan Mahmud II and is dated beginning of Şevval 1232 AH (August 1817 CE). The reverse of the manuscript contains several inscriptions: one in black ink indicating payment (?) of customs duties in 1232 AH; one in black ink reading ''on sefine''; and one in red ink reading :. Firman-i ali gümrük defterine olunmakdan yad ne ki ilm-ü sabır ne ki sene ba'd ul-nazar marur ne ruhsat-u (?). dated 1232 AH.
