Scope and Content

This volume contains a treatise on precious stones (including substances like musk and ambergris) written in 917 AH (1511-12 CE) by Yahya İbn-i Mehmet el-Gaffari, who dedicated it to Prince Korkut, son of Sultan Bayezit II. It consists of four mehazin, which are subdivided into evbap. The work is a translation (f 5r), most probably from the Persian for the author states that he has drawn freely from the material in the Tansūqnāmah-i Īlkhānī (تنسوقنامۀ ایلخانی) and the Jawharnāmah-i jadīd (جوهرنامۀ جدید) (ff 5r, 83r). . Although the work is usually referred to as the Cevhername in the text itself, the correct title (which forms a chronogram for the date of composition), Yakutatu'l-mehazin fi cevher il-maadin, appears on f 5v. . This manuscript was copied in 953 AH (1546-47 CE) by Hüseyin İbn-i Mehmet. .
