Scope and Content

An Ottoman Turkish translation of the Kharīdat al-ᶜajāᵓib wa farīdat al-gharāᵓib (خريدة العجائب وفريدة الغرائب), a cosmographical work by Sirāj al-Dīn Abū Ḥafṣ ᶜUmar ibn al-Wardī (died 850 AH/1446 CE). The translator's name is Mahmud el-Hatip ul-Rumî and the date of composition of the work is 970 AH (1562-63 CE). A map of the world centred on the Kaaba in Mecca is found on ff 3v-4r. The map covers the area from Vilayet-i Çin on the far left to Ab-i Tance (Tangiers) on the far right, and from Sedd-i Acuç ve Macuç/Arış-ı İblis on the bottom to Mahraç al-Nil and Ghana (?) at the top. Although schematically similar to the map found in Or 13201, it is stylistically different. The manuscript was copied in the middle of the month of Şaban 1047 AH (December 1637 CE). The end of the manuscript contains a second colophon outlining the name of the translator and the date of the translation (f 283r), as well as a third colophon bearing the following text:. Hüvve Küffar Haksar Ağırhuh (?) nam-ı mevzı'ada üzerimize gelip ve bozgun verdik (?) fi mah-i Cümaziülahır fi yevm serşembe min şuhur sene isna ve sittin ve alf.
