HAWARDEN POOR LAW UNION RECORDS

Records relating to the Hawarden Union, 1857-1948, including records of the Clerk to the Guardians, 1857-1930; records of the treasurer, 1924-1930; records of the workhouse master, 1914-1932; records of the relieving officer, 1894-1939; records of the collector of the Guardians, 1924-1925; and records relating to non-Poor Law duties revolving upon Boards of Guardians, 1862-1948.

In 1837, Great Boughton Poor Law Union was formed from 98 parishes in Cheshire and three in Flintshire, including Hawarden. In 1853, Hawarden Poor Law Union was formed; it included parishes in Flintshire and Cheshire; in 1871, those from Cheshire were removed from the Union.

Constitution: Hawarden, Higher Kinnerton and Saltney, co. Flint (with Hope, Marford & Hoseley and Treuddyn from 1871); Claverton, Dodleston, Eaton, Eccleston, Lower Kinnerton, Marlston cum Lache, Poulton, Pulford, Great Saughall, Little Saughall, Shotwick, Shotwick Park and Woodbank, co. Chester (to 1871).

The workhouse was located in Broughton, Hawarden. The Board of Guardians was elected by local landowners and rate-payers. Other duties were laid upon the Guardians, such as birth, deaths and marriages registration, vaccination, sanitation and infant life protection. The Union was abolished in 1930, and its responsibilities were taken over by Flintshire County Council's Public Assistance Committee.

Arranged into the following: Clerk to the Guardians; Treasurer; Workhouse Master; Relieving Officer; Collector of the Guardians; and non-Poor Law duties revolving upon Boards of Guardians.

The records have been preserved in their entirety, with the exception of a few ephemeral classes, and rate books later than 1914. These have been 'weeded' to leave only those for the years 1916, 1921 and 1926.
