Steel Industry Management Association (SIMA), earlier the British Iron and Steel Management Association (BISMA)

The collection is a mixture of administrative and research records. It includes material such as interview notes arising directly out of Greg Bamber's research on SIMA and managerial trade unionism generally, and national, regional and local records of SIMA itself, acquired or created either as a result of his role as regional secretary or for research purposes.

On the initiative of the North East Coast Iron and Steel Works Staff Association, BISMA was founded in 1951 and changed its name to SIMA in 1969. It merged with the Electrical and Engineering Staff Association section of the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunication and Plumbing Union with effect from January 1981, although retaining its own name and identity as part of Unite.

Apart from MSS.508/4/1, which was transferred from University of Warwick Library, these records were deposited in September 2010 by Professor Greg Bamber of Monash University, Melbourne. Between 1973 and 1975, whilst he was senior research officer at the Manpower Studies Research Unit at Heriot-Watt University, Bamber conducted in collaboration with SIMA a research project entitled 'Professional scientists, technologists and managers: career insecurity and collective organisation'. Between 1975 and 1979 he was SIMA regional secretary (midlands), based in Doncaster, and in 1979 he joined Durham University Business School.

The arrangement of these records is based on the SIMA file classification scheme shown in 755/9/2/31-32, which used references beginning with numbers. Some items have references beginning with letters which may have been part of a classification scheme used for the research project.
