Administrative / Biographical History

This joint stock bank was formed in 1835 out of the business of the private bank of Moule & Co. (est. 1792) of Melksham. It acquired the private banks of Everett, Ravenhill & Co. (est. 1777) of Warminster and Ward, Brown & Co. of Marlborough (est. 1803) in 1860 and 1866 respectively. By 1877, 12 branches had been established at Melksham, Salisbury, Devizes, Calne, Trowbridge, Swindon, Marlborough, Bradford on Avon, Wootton Bassett, Corsham, Pewsey and New Swindon. That year, the bank amalgamated with Hampshire Banking Co. (est. 1834) to form North Wilts & Hampshire Banking Co. which was renamed Capital & Counties Bank in 1878.
