Shipping book of the East India Company Marine Department, being a register of ships embarking for India carrying troops and stores and of ships carrying coal.
The register of troops and stores covers 19 December 1838 to 18 December 1849. Each folio comprises a standard form providing summary information about voyages, including the tendering process, the name of the ship, whether troops are Queen's troops or recruits of the East India Company, rates per head, the 'presidency' of the ship (i.e. Bombay, Calcutta or Madras), dates of embarkation and the name of the owner.
The register of ships carrying coal to India covers 1840-1855 and provides information about contracts for the supply of coal to various parts of India and notes if any cargo was lost or delayed etc.
The volume also contains printed rates of tonnage, 1834, manuscript rates of exchange, 1845-1857, and manuscript notes.
