Scope and Content

This series contains correspondence, minutes of meetings, memoranda and reports concerning the activities of the Press Office and Public Relations Department relating to developments in transport services. Subjects include changes in fares, strikes, the campaign for staggered hours of work in London and the conversion from trams to buses. The records include details of the work of the Traffic Enquiry Office, press releases concerning service developments and publicity overseas, details of reviews and the management of services and Greater London Council meetings on developments in London and the London Travel Survey. The series also contains correspondence with the public regarding complaints and suggestions and requests for information concerning London Transport from other organisations. Includes details of special events such as the coronation, the centenary of the Underground, the Festival of Britain and the World Cup, advertising campaigns, the Charing Cross exhibition site, details of London Transport information films with scripts, details of the construction of the tower on the Wembley Park Estate and the appearance of London Transport to the public in general such as signs, destination plates and street furniture. Includes samples of publicity such as leaflets, booklets and posters. Also includes details of the organisation of London Transport such as staff salaries, working conditions, inter-departmental visits, recruitment including the appointment of women, conferences and exhibitions, the departmental budget, training, staff overtime and the impact on services, correspondence procedures, accounts and the selection of staff. Also includes minutes of Staff Relations Policy Committee meetings concerning road and rail staff relations with leaders and reports and memoranda concerning factors contributing to esprit de corps (team-spirit); reviews of social, recreational and cultural facilities for staff; 1946 Victory Day Celebrations; public communication at Underground stations; and road and rail staff relations with leaders
