Scope and Content

Charlbury British School opened in 1815 facing Browns Lane off Sheep Street. In 1863 an Infants department was added to the school (please see S58/2 for records of this school.). In 1888 the British School was taken over by the School Board because of the need to expand. The school was enlarged in 1906 and expanded again in 1928, when schools in neighbouring villages were closed. In 1958 The Spendlove County Secondary Modern School was built and the old school became Charlbury County Primary School. In 1987 the old school was closed and all children moved to the 'new' site on Crawborough Road. Please see S58/1 for other records of this school.
