Photocopied Papers of Captain William Henry Lindquist and Family

This small collection of photocopies of papers of Captain William Henry Lindquist includes some 20 letters, orders, memoranda and circulars relating to his involvement in the First Burmese War, 1823-1826. There are also papers relating to the estate of his son, also William Henry, of Calcutta, including his certificate of appointment as a volunteer pilot for the East India Company, Fort William, Bengal, in 1854.

Captain William Henry Lindquist was involved in the First Burmese War as a second mate, serving in the Flotilla Service in command of a division of gun boats and also in the Pilot Service. He became a captain, c. 1833 and was given the command of the steamship 'Diana'. He retired as captain, owing to ill health, in November 1836. He was appointed Vice-Consul for Suez in Egypt for the United States of America in 1849 and resigned in June 1853. He was subsequently appointed as Marshall of the Vice-Admiralty Court in Malta on 29 June 1854. He married Amelia Cohen on 7 February 1829 and had at least one child, a son named William Henry, c. 1838.

His son, William Henry, had two sons and two daughters, one of whom predeceased him, and he died between 1900-1911. William Henry married Maria Dyer in 1863 and was employed in the Bengal Pilot Service.
