Administrative / Biographical History

This private bank was established in Tavistock, Devon in 1791 as Gill & Rundle. The Gill family operated woollen mills and an iron foundry. The firm went through various partnership changes to become Gill, Morshead & Co. in 1875; it was otherwise known as the Tavistock Bank. Branches were opened in Launceston (1832) and later in Morwellham, while there were agencies at Calstock (1879), and at Gunnislake and Holsworthy (1885). Fox, Fowler & Co. acquired the business in 1889.
