There are three lists of Members' names preceding the portraits, each of which gives the portrait number against the name of the Member. They are:
Alphabetical by Members' names. This contains 201 names, including the Speaker, but when two names from the Addenda at the end of the book are added, the total is 203.
Alphabetical by Constituency. This lists 206 constituencies, four of them vacant, but with one name from the Addenda this again makes 203, including the Speaker.
Numerical by portrait order. There are 206 numbers, of which six are shown as vacant; the Addenda fills two of these, leaving 76, 80, 96 and 100½ vacant, but the actual photographs include a portrait at 80. An investigation by the Canadian Parliamentary Librarian shows that this is of Nathaniel Higinbotham, who won Wellington North at a bye-election on 18 March 1875, but whose name does not appear in the book. The remaining gaps are for the constituencies of Gaspé and Provencher, and for the Speaker who, though elected for Gloucester, is not represented in this sequence of portraits.

all are faded, and the pages on which the photographs were stuck have buckled. Although the photographs are faded, the detail could probably be recovered by re-photographing.
