Scope and Content

Collections of Thomas Farmer Dukes, FSA (1836) conc. Uriconium (Wroxeter), Shropshire; before 1829 (fols. 7-105), with additional material (fols. x-xii, 1-6), before 1841.

The main collection consists of pen and wash drawings by Dukes (fols. 11-50) including views of Wroxeter, Samian ware and inscribed stones, a plan of the Roman baths, tessellated floors, etc. The drawings are preceded by maps of Wroxeter and surroundings (fols. 8, 9), and followed by notes and extracts conc. Wroxeter (fols. 51-97), consisting of a descriptive list of Roman coins, facsimile copies of charters, temp. Hen. I-Edw. III, and extracts from patent rolls, etc., 1347-1805. At the end of the volume are drawings of camps in Shropshire at Chesterton (fol. 98), Bury Walls, near Hawkstone (fol. 100), and Caer Caradoc Hill (fol. 102), and of the Roman tessellated pavement (fol. 105) found at The Lea near Shrewsbury, 1793. Additional material preceding the collection consists of an account of Uriconium mostly derived from MSS of Edward Lloyd and William Mytton (fols. 1-6), with further illustrative and literary material, including Welsh poetry, with translation (fols. x-xii).

See H. Owen and J. B. Blakeway, A History of Shrewsbury, I (1825), viii. Table of contents, fol. ix, covering the main collection and additional material.
