Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The photographs relate to the work of the former Newtown Goods Yard, Cardiff, managed by the Great Western Rail Co. 6 photographs of the Great Western Railway Co. Newtown Goods Yard, Cardiff, or freight depot. The earlier depot was reorganised and rebuilt by the company 1928-1929. This enabled the construction of a system of freight trains operating between major towns and cities enabling delivery of goods on the day following despatch known as the Registered Transits Scheme. The company introduced use of road-rail containers operating from depots such as those in Cardiff, Swansea and Bristol connecting with a fleet of motor lorries for delivery on the same day for places within 30 miles from the depots. A smaller service from other railway stations provided additional local goods delivery.
