Bartleet family papers

This is a collection of medical certificates awarded to Edwin Bartleet and his son, Thomas Hiron Bartleet, by respective medical institutions.

Edwin Bartleet (1802-1876) FRCS, received his medical education at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London and for more than forty years he practised medicine in Birmingham. He was appointed Surgeon to the Birmingham Eye Infirmary. He retired to Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire where he served as a Justice of the Peace.

Thomas Hiron Bartleet (1837-1891) son of Edwin Bartleet, was born in Birmingham and educated at King Edward VI School. He was a student of Queen's College Medical School and the General Hospital, Birmingham and King's College, London where he was awarded a Gold Medal for Surgery. After studying in Paris and Germany he returned to Birmingham to join his father's partner in practice. He was appointed Surgeon to the Children's Hospital and also Surgeon to the General Hospital. In 1871 he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. He was also involved in the amalgamation of Queen's College, where he held the post of Professor of Physiology and Sydenham College medical schools in Birmingham and the foundation of Mason Science College. He held a position as a Magistrate and was a Prison Visitor and for many years was an active member of the Birmingham branch of the British Medical Assiciation.
