Administrative / Biographical History

The British Institute of Management was founded as an independent body in 1947 on the recommendation of the Baillieu Committee set up by the Board of Trade and concerned with the raising of standards of management in Britain. It amalgamated with the Institution of Industrial Managers in 1992 to form the Institute of Management, which changed its name to the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) in 2002.
