William Charles Denis Browne archive

Manuscripts of fourteen compositions: thirteen are songs and the other is a miniature suite for full orchestra; also newspaper cuttings and other papers.

William Charles Denis Browne (1888-1915), matriculated at Clare in 1907. He was admitted on a Classics scholarship but spent most of his time at College pursuing musical interests and rowing. Took a teaching position at Repton after Clare but was there less than a year and then took a job as organist at Guy's hopsital in London. He then taught music at Morley College at the same time as working at Guy's hospital and was also a music critic for the Times and New Statesman. He was killed in action at Gallipoli during the First World War.

Acc 1986/8 - Presented to the College by the Rev. J.S.D. Mansel, nephew of Denis Browne, in 1973 and transferred to the Archives in February 1986 by the Director of Music. Additional material given to the archive by Hugh Taylor relating to his research and including a photograph of WDB, Acc 2014-15/08

A volume of Everyman and Miracle Plays, annotated by WDB, was kept and also annotated by Mansfield Forbes - see CCHR/2/FOR/4/6 WDB's correspondence with Rupert Brooke and Edward Marsh (King's College RCB/S/6/1-2), along with some of his personal effects including photographs (RCB/S/11) kept by Rupert Brooke, have been catalogued as part of the Schroder Collection at King's College, Cambridge.
