Scope and Content

Matthew Robinson Boulton was an officer in the 1st Battalion, Loyal Birmingham Vounteers, from its inception in 1803. All his papers relating to the Battalion were kept in a large red box referred to as the 'Birmingham Volunteers' box. While these records are subsidiary to the Correspondence and Papers of Matthew Robinson Boulton, as they form a discrete and substantial group they have been separated for convenience.

Inside the lid of the original box was affixed the following list of contents:

Heads:
Tactics
Orders
Corresponde. & Regiml. Communicas.
Interior Oeconomy of the Battalion
Governmt. Regulats. rele. to Voluntr. Corps
Establishment & Organisation of ye Birminghm. & other Voluntr. Corps

All these bundles of papers were found to be extant in the box, along with papers not mentioned on the list. While the battalion itself was founded in 1803, Boulton collected various papers relating to the formation of previous battalions for reference.
