Scope and Content

Family and personal letters, addressed, with one exception, to Edward Lyulph Stanley:

  • Numbers 1-16, 25-77 are from his brothers and sisters, the Hon. Maude Stanley (numbers 25-57) and the Hon. John Constantine Stanley (numbers 62-77) being responsible for most of them;
  • Numbers 17-24 are from his aunt Louisa Dorothea Stanley.
The exception (number 87) is a three-page letter, describing the fighting, written from the Camp at Balaklava [The Crimea], 28 September [1854] by Augustus Lane Fox (later Lieutenant-General Augustus Lane Fox-Pitt-Rivers) to his wife Alice, sister of Edward Lyulph Stanley.
