Scope and Content

The records catalogued here were found in County Hall in 1990 and given accession number 3067.

They consist of a cash book, election diary and precedent book kept by Frederick Percy Thornton who worked in the Department of the Clerk of the Peace and the Clerk of the County Council between at least 1889 and 1925 and was Chief Clerk by 1913. During this period there were two Clerks of the Peace and Clerks of the County Council: Thomas Marriott Davenport (1889-1913), who was also Under Sheriff, Diocesan Registrar and Returning Officer, and James Rose (1913-1928). The cash book and election diary appear to have been continued by Thornton's successors.
