Scope and Content

These records were deposited in December 1982 as accession 2100.

The earliest record in the collection is the Benefactions Book for the County Prison (O101/A1/1) but this is not strictly a record of the Society. The earliest Society records are the Minutes which exist from 1941.

The main work of the Society illustrated by the records is the setting up and running of Thornton House, a hostel on the Iffley Road. It was for prisoners released on parole and was open from 1968-1978. On the closing of Thornton House, the Society's funds were used to make grants to specific prisoners.

Some items in the collection are closed for 50 years from the date of the most recent item.

Abbreviations: NACRO : National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders

OPAS : Oxfordshire Prisoners' Aid Society.

Searchers should also see the records catalogued as O.P.A.S. I-III in the old style catalogue.

Catalogued by Eleanor Roberts, August 1992.
