Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Great Britain's Coastguard service was founded to fight smuggling, in the 1820s, when its officers were instructed to take responsibility at shipwrecks to safeguard cargoes and vessels from looters. In addition boatmen were to train with life saving equipment. In the 1990s Her Majesty's Coastguard was made a government executive agency. In 1998, the Marine Safety Agency and the Coastguard Agency merged and became the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). HM Coastguard operated stations around the Pembrokeshire coaast including St Anns Head Station, Dale; Wooltack Point, Marloes; Newport; and Angle Station; they undertook rescues, training, wreck services and salvage.
