Harry Yoxall Letters

The collection holds letters to Harry Waldo Yoxall, predominantly from artists, politicians and a number of other prominent people of the time, including the historian Herbert Fisher, the artist George Belcher, Sir Hartley Shawcross and Lord Thomas Horder. They comprise a mixture of both business and personal correspondence, covering 40 years of Harry W. Yoxall's life.

Harry Waldo Yoxall, OBE , MC (1896-1984), publisher and company chairman was born Richmond , Surrey. Son of Sir James Henry Yoxall, Harry W. Yoxall served in the 18th Kings Royal Rifle corps in WWI and was awarded the Military Cross in 1916. In 1917 he joined the British Military Mission to the United States and was asked to join Conde Nast Publications Inc. in 1921. Cited as the originator of lifestyle magazines, Conde Nast introduced British Vogue in 1916 and Harry W. Yoxall was involved in its management from 1924. He rose to Managing Director of Conde Nast Publications (UK) in 1934 and became chairman in 1957. A life long wine enthusiast, he was also chairman of the International Wine and Food Society 1972-1975. He also had a keen interest in art and was a Member of the Council of the Royal College of Art 1951-54. A prominent Richmond resident, Harry W. Yoxall was a Justice of the Peace for Richmond (1941-65) and Governor of the Star and Garter Home for Disabled Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen in Richmond (194376). He resided in Kew Gardens until 1937, then at The Green, Richmond until 1951. He lived his later years in Kensington where he died in 1984.
