Famous monuments of Central India

Printed book by Sir Lepel Griffin illustrated with autotypes. The autotypes were of originals by Lala Deen Diyal and are mostly approximately 280 x 205 mm, the few which are smaller are so indicated.
In his preface to this book, Griffin wrote: 'The present volume has been issued with the sole desire of placing, by the autotype process, on permanent record in public and private libraries, accurate representations of the more important architectural monuments of Central India, before time, neglect, or barbarous and greedy hands shall have destroyed the buildings which have so special an artistic value in relation to the ancient arts of building and sculpture in the east, and which possess a further interest as illustrating the history of the most highly cultured among the elder members of the Aryan family. I have specially selected for representation in this present volume, three groups of buildings at Gwalior, Khajraho, and Sanchi. Other autotypes of buildings of architectural interest in Bundelkhand and Rewah are included'.

Sir Lepel Henry Griffin (1838-1908) joined the Indian Civil Service in 1860 and had a distinguished career as administrator and diplomat. From 1881-1888 he was Resident at Indore and Agent to the Governor General for Central India. He retired in 1889, but continued to be an active speaker and writer on Indian affairs.
