Scope and Content

Correspondence dated 1914-1915, with several stray letters dated 1910 and 1921, largely addressed to J. T. Evans. The majority are personal and family letters, some concerning the war (1914-1918) and its problems; others (particularly those from H. B. Walters, British Museum) concern J. T. Evans's interests in church antiquities. A set of notes from H. B. Walters relating to the church plate of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Two rubbings of bell inscriptions, one of a bell at Prendergast, co. Pemb., and the other from St Davids Cathedral. Correspondents include: Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark), Cirencester, T. H. Evans, the Rev. George Lewis (Gloucester), Sir John Rhys (Oxford), and H. B. Walters (British Museum). Press cuttings, dated 1910, relating to a mediaeval chalice and paten found near Dolgellau, co. Mer. in 1890, which were bequeathed to the king, who in turn presented them to the National Museum of Wales. Amongst the cuttings is a reprint of an article on these very pieces of plate by W. Cripps, author of 'Old English Plate' and husband of Helen Cripps (Countess Bismark). Cuttings, 1915, relating to the death of Captain Titus Evans, Ty Rhos, Fishguard, father of T. H. Evans, J. T. Evans, and A. W. Wade-Evans. 116 Pp. Indexed.
