Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain was founded in 1964 under the presidency of Professor Louis Arnaud Reid. Its aim was 'to promote the development and teaching of the rigorous philosophical study of educational questions'. The Society is still active. It holds an annual three-day conference held close to Easter at New College, Oxford, as well as a variety of local branch meetings and conferences. The Society publishes the Journal of Philosophy of Education, IMPACT, a series of policy-related pamphlets, and an annual register of members' interests. The Society has members from both the UK and overseas and is normally open to all those who have been or are engaged in teaching, research or some form of study of the philosophy of education.
The Society is managed by the Executive Committee consisting of a President, Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Conference Organiser, Editor of the Journal, six elected members and up to six co-opted members. The Journal of Philosophy has its own Editorial Board.
