Scope and Content

Reports and files relating to Ministry of Defence (MoD) funded Research Projects undertaken by the Liquid Crystal Research Group at the University of Hull Chemistry Department in partnership with various scientific research establishments. Research was undertaken between the 1970s and the 2000s. To give some background, MoD scientific research establishments went through a progressive series of reconstitutions during the late 20th century. Of relevance to this programme of research are the following: RSRE; DRA; DERA; QUINETIQ. Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) was a research establishment within MoD formed in 1976 from various earlier research establishments. Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) amalgamated with various research establishments in 1991 to form Defence Research Agency (DRA). Defence Research Agency (DRA) became part of the newly formed Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) in 1995. In 2001 DERA was split to form two organisations, one of which became QuinetiQ and the other of which became the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL).
