Benjamin Jones was born in Neath, of Carmarthenshire stock, and brought up in Tonna. He worked for the Neath Canal Navigation Company for 53 years, owned a boot and shoe shop in Glynneath, and assisted the secretary of the Abernant Dinas Silica Brick and Cement Company (making entries in the Companys letter book). He was a councillor and clerk to Neath Higher Parish Council. in 1900 he married Mary Elizabeth Thorburn. He died in 1951, aged 74
