Fairfax Moresby collection on megalithic monuments

Scope and Content

'Megalithic Monuments / Drawings Photographs / Cuttings' / Admiral Fairfax Moresby 1850-90

This volume was used for two different purposes, possibly by two different people.

It is foliated rather than paginated.

Folios 1-15 appear to be the work of an unidentified compiler, at some point after Moresby's death. They contain drawings and photographs of human and animal bones found in archaeological contexts, with a lengthy press cutting from a French newspaper, 1872.

Folio 15 bears a MS note to the effect that the following drawings, photographs and cuttings, to page 59 [in fact, 102] were collected by the late Admiral Fairfax Moresby, 1850-90; an example of Moresby's signature, cut from a letter, is pasted on to the page.

The rest of the volume is as described - megalithic monuments.

After fol 102, an index, MS, in what appears to be the same hand as the earlier notes.

There is nothing to indicate the identity of the final compiler, nor when or from whom the volume came to SAL, although that cannot have been earlier than 1890.
